Feeling refreshed, if not totally revitalised, after a hot shower, Jude sat on her bed for a little while, bundled up in her thick pyjamas and bathrobe. She brushed out her wet hair and thought about the conversation she’d had earlier with Binnie. The DS clearly thought there was no way anyone else would have been able to put Sarah in the tree, a view shared by her boss, who had seen this as proof no further foul play had been involved.

If that was the case, then the only logical explanation was that Sarah had done it herself. Logical, perhaps, but believable? Jude just couldn’t see it. But if it was neither of these things then what was the third, hidden option that nobody had thought about? There must be one if Jude was to cling to the belief that Sarah hadn’t killed herself, but there was nothing that could explain how else it might have happened.

The revelation about Sarah’s affair made her skin prickle the more she thought about it. What if Les Turner really didn’t have anything to do with Sarah’s death and it was the other N who did? Or what if Nate had found out about the affair and his temper had taken over? And then there was the familiar woman in the photo they’d found on Sarah’s laptop, if only Jude could remember where she’d seen her before.

As Jude sat there puzzling over the possible answers and not finding even a dash of certainty in any of them, Lucy burst in.

‘Lou!’ exclaimed Jude. ‘You frightened the life out of me. Haven’t you ever heard of knocking?’

‘I thought you’d want to see this,’ said Lucy.

She pushed her phone so close to Jude’s face that any sort of focus was impossible. Jude took the phone, wanting to see what Lucy was so excited about. On the screen was the first clue for that day’s Lexigle word.
